Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of Arabic language education programs and the establishment of a language environment (bi’ah lughawiyah) as a strategy to strengthen the Arabic language competence of students at Pondok Pesantren Sunan Drajat. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving pesantren administrators, Arabic language teachers, and students. Data analysis was conducted through systematic data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that Arabic language education at Pondok Pesantren Sunan Drajat has undergone a transformation from a traditional approach based on the mastery of nahwu and sharaf to a communicative approach that emphasizes active language skills. This transformation is strengthened through the establishment of a bi’ah lughawiyah implemented in a structured manner through daily vocabulary provision, habitual Arabic communication, intensive mentoring, and continuous evaluation. The language environment has been proven to support the improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery, speaking skills, and confidence in using Arabic. This study concludes that the integration of pesantren educational traditions and modern communicative approaches is able to create an adaptive and contextual Arabic language learning model. The establishment of bi’ah lughawiyah not only functions as a language learning strategy but also as part of the formation of a modern pesantren academic culture without eliminating its Islamic identity
