Pre-wedding photo sessions have become a common part of modern wedding preparations, but their practice raises issues under Islamic law, particularly when they involve physical interaction, intimate poses, khalwat, and attire that does not comply with Sharia provisions. This study aims to analyze the legal status of pre-wedding photos from the perspective of Islamic law and to identify the Sharia limitations on their practice. The study employs a qualitative method using a literature review approach. Data were obtained from the Qur’an, hadith, the opinions of contemporary scholars, books, scientific journals, and previous research, and were then analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method. The results indicate that the legal assessment of pre-wedding photography must distinguish between photography as a means of documentation and the accompanying behavior. The views of contemporary scholars who permit photography do not, by themselves, automatically justify all pre-wedding practices, as the purpose and manner of their use remain legal considerations. Thus, the permissibility of pre-wedding photography depends on its compliance with Sharia provisions, while prohibited elements must be assessed based on their respective characteristics and legal grounds. This study contributes an analytical framework that distinguishes the rules governing photography from those governing the interaction and appearance of couples during a photo shoot, so that the evaluation of pre-wedding photos is not based solely on their terminology but on the accompanying practices.
