Abstract

This study examines the syntactic function and contextual meaning of the preposition ‘ala in the phrase “harramtu al-zhulma ‘ala nafsi” in Hadith Qudsi 24. It uses a qualitative library-research design and textual analysis, focusing on the grammatical relation between ‘ala and nafsi and consulting Arabic grammatical literature and hadith commentaries for contextual interpretation. The analysis identifies ‘ala as a preposition governing the genitive noun nafsi. Its theological implication cannot be established from the lexical meaning alone; the phrase must be read in the context of the hadith and its commentarial tradition. The study is limited to one hadith text and does not claim to establish empirical evidence of theological misconceptions or to resolve broader theological debates. It illustrates how syntactic description and contextual interpretation can be considered together in a focused reading of a religious text.
