Conflict of Interest
Conflict of Interest
AL-MAQASHID: Journal of Economics and Islamic Business is committed to maintaining transparency, objectivity, and integrity throughout the research and publication process. The journal adheres to the principles and guidelines established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) regarding the identification, disclosure, and management of conflicts of interest.
A conflict of interest arises when financial, personal, professional, institutional, or other relationships may influence, or be perceived to influence, the objectivity, integrity, or credibility of research findings, peer-review assessments, or editorial decisions.
All authors, editors, and reviewers are required to disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest that may affect their responsibilities in the publication process.
1. Types of Conflicts of Interest
Conflicts of interest may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Financial Conflicts of Interest: Financial relationships such as research funding, grants, consulting fees, employment, stock ownership, honoraria, or other financial benefits from organisations that may have an interest in the research findings.
Personal Conflicts of Interest: Personal relationships, family connections, close friendships, or personal disagreements that may influence professional judgement or decision-making.
Professional and Academic Conflicts of Interest: Professional collaborations, academic competition, supervisory relationships, or other academic interests that may affect the impartiality of authors, editors, or reviewers.
Institutional Conflicts of Interest: Relationships or affiliations with universities, research institutions, Islamic financial institutions, business organisations, or other entities that may influence research outcomes or editorial decisions.
Other Conflicts of Interest: Any additional circumstances, including ideological commitments or organisational interests, that may compromise or appear to compromise the independence and objectivity of scholarly work.
2. Responsibilities of Authors
All authors submitting manuscripts to AL-MAQASHID: Journal of Economics and Islamic Business must disclose any financial or non-financial conflicts of interest relevant to their research.
Authors are required to:
Declare all potential conflicts of interest during manuscript submission.
Disclose all sources of research funding, sponsorship, or financial support.
Explain the role of funding organisations in the research design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, manuscript preparation, and publication decisions, where applicable.
Ensure that research findings and conclusions are presented objectively and are not improperly influenced by external interests.
Inform the Editorial Office promptly if any previously undisclosed conflicts of interest are identified during the review or publication process.
Authors who have no conflicts of interest must include the following statement in their manuscripts:
"The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest regarding the publication of this article."
Where conflicts of interest exist, authors must provide a clear and transparent statement describing the nature of the relevant relationships or interests.
3. Responsibilities of Editors
Editors are responsible for ensuring that editorial decisions are made independently, objectively, and solely on the basis of academic merit, originality, methodological quality, and relevance to the journal's Focus and Scope.
Editors must disclose any potential conflicts of interest involving manuscripts under their consideration.
Editors must not participate in the evaluation or decision-making process for manuscripts when personal, professional, financial, or institutional relationships may compromise their impartiality.
When a conflict of interest is identified, the manuscript must be assigned to another qualified editor who has no relevant conflict of interest.
4. Responsibilities of Peer Reviewers
Peer reviewers are required to conduct manuscript evaluations objectively, fairly, and confidentially.
Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest before accepting a manuscript review invitation.
Reviewers should decline or withdraw from reviewing manuscripts when they have:
Financial interests related to the research topic or findings.
Close personal or professional relationships with the authors.
Recent research collaborations or academic relationships that may compromise impartiality.
Institutional affiliations or competing interests that may influence their evaluations.
Other circumstances that could prevent an independent and unbiased assessment.
Reviewers must not use unpublished information obtained through the peer-review process for personal, professional, or financial advantage.
5. Disclosure and Management of Conflicts of Interest
AL-MAQASHID: Journal of Economics and Islamic Business requires transparent disclosure and appropriate management of conflicts of interest throughout the editorial and publication processes.
When a potential conflict of interest is identified, the Editorial Board will assess its nature, relevance, and possible influence on the research or publication process.
Depending on the circumstances, appropriate actions may include:
Requesting additional information or clarification from the relevant parties.
Reassigning the manuscript to an independent editor or reviewer.
Requiring authors to revise or complete their conflict-of-interest declarations.
Disclosing relevant conflicts of interest in the published article.
Taking appropriate editorial action when undisclosed conflicts of interest raise concerns about the integrity of the research or publication process.
The existence of a conflict of interest does not automatically result in manuscript rejection. However, failure to disclose relevant conflicts of interest may constitute a violation of publication ethics.
6. Conflicts of Interest Identified After Publication
If a previously undisclosed conflict of interest is identified after an article has been published, the Editorial Board will evaluate its potential impact on the credibility, reliability, and integrity of the published research.
Where necessary, the journal may request clarification from the authors, publish a correction or disclosure statement, or take further action in accordance with relevant COPE guidelines.
In cases where undisclosed conflicts of interest are associated with serious research misconduct or unreliable findings, additional editorial measures, including an expression of concern or retraction, may be considered.
7. Commitment to Editorial Independence
AL-MAQASHID: Journal of Economics and Islamic Business is committed to protecting editorial independence and ensuring that all publication decisions are free from inappropriate financial, institutional, commercial, or personal influence.
The journal maintains that transparency in declaring and managing conflicts of interest is essential to preserving academic credibility, public trust, and the integrity of scholarly communication.
All parties involved in the publication process are expected to uphold these principles and comply with the journal's ethical standards.
