Research Misconduct
Research Misconduct
AL-MAQASHID: Journal of Economics and Islamic Business is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity, research ethics, and responsible scholarly publishing. The journal follows the principles and guidelines established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) in identifying, preventing, and addressing research misconduct.
All authors, editors, and reviewers are expected to uphold ethical standards throughout the research, manuscript submission, peer-review, and publication processes.
Types of Research Misconduct
Research misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following practices:
Fabrication: Inventing research data, findings, survey responses, interview results, financial information, or other research evidence and presenting them as genuine.
Falsification: Manipulating research materials, methodologies, data, statistical analyses, or results in a manner that misrepresents the actual research process or findings.
Plagiarism: Using another person's ideas, words, research findings, or intellectual contributions without appropriate acknowledgement or citation.
Duplicate or Redundant Publication: Submitting or publishing substantially similar manuscripts in more than one journal without proper disclosure, justification, or editorial approval.
Improper Authorship: Engaging in unethical authorship practices, including ghost authorship, gift authorship, guest authorship, or unauthorised changes to the authorship list.
Citation Manipulation: Deliberately adding irrelevant or unnecessary citations to artificially increase citation counts or influence journal, author, or institutional metrics.
Data Manipulation and Misrepresentation: Selectively reporting, altering, or omitting research data or findings in ways that produce misleading conclusions.
Undisclosed Conflicts of Interest: Failing to disclose financial, professional, institutional, or personal interests that could potentially influence the research findings, interpretation, or publication process.
Unethical Research Practices: Conducting research without appropriate ethical considerations, including violations of participants' rights, informed consent requirements, confidentiality, or applicable institutional and legal regulations.
Peer-Review Manipulation: Attempting to influence or compromise the peer-review process through fabricated reviewer identities, false information, inappropriate communication, or other deceptive practices.
Prevention of Research Misconduct
To maintain the integrity and credibility of published research, AL-MAQASHID: Journal of Economics and Islamic Business requires all authors to ensure that their manuscripts are original, accurate, and prepared in accordance with established research ethics.
Authors must appropriately acknowledge all sources, accurately report research methods and findings, disclose potential conflicts of interest, and obtain necessary ethical approvals when applicable.
The Editorial Office may use plagiarism detection software, including iThenticate, to assess manuscript originality. Similarity reports will be evaluated carefully, considering the nature, context, and extent of textual overlap rather than relying solely on similarity percentages.
Handling Allegations of Research Misconduct
Any suspected research misconduct involving submitted or published manuscripts will be handled fairly, objectively, and confidentially in accordance with relevant COPE guidelines.
The journal may undertake the following procedures:
Initial Assessment: The Editorial Board will conduct a preliminary assessment of reported allegations to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to warrant further examination.
Request for Clarification: The corresponding author and other relevant parties may be contacted to provide explanations, supporting documents, original research data, or other necessary information.
Editorial Investigation: The Editorial Board will assess the available evidence and may consult independent experts, relevant institutions, or other appropriate parties when necessary.
Editorial Decision: Based on the findings, the Editorial Board will determine appropriate actions in accordance with the seriousness and nature of the identified issues.
Documentation and Confidentiality: All allegations, communications, assessments, and decisions will be appropriately documented. Confidentiality will be maintained throughout the process, subject to applicable legal and ethical requirements.
Authors will be given a reasonable opportunity to respond to allegations before an editorial decision is reached.
Actions and Sanctions
When research misconduct is established, the journal may take appropriate actions depending on the nature and severity of the violation, including:
Rejecting manuscripts that violate research ethics or publication standards.
Requesting corrections or clarification of inaccurate or misleading information.
Suspending editorial consideration while serious concerns are investigated.
Publishing a correction, expression of concern, or retraction for an affected article when warranted.
Informing the authors' affiliated institutions or relevant authorities when appropriate.
Taking other proportionate editorial measures consistent with the journal's publication ethics policies.
Decisions regarding corrections, expressions of concern, and retractions will follow relevant COPE recommendations to protect the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record.
Responsibilities of Authors, Editors, and Reviewers
Authors are responsible for ensuring the originality, accuracy, transparency, and ethical integrity of their research. They must promptly inform the Editorial Office if significant errors or ethical concerns are identified in their submitted or published work.
Editors are responsible for evaluating allegations impartially, maintaining confidentiality, avoiding conflicts of interest, and making editorial decisions based on credible evidence and established ethical principles.
Reviewers are responsible for conducting objective and confidential evaluations and promptly notifying the Editorial Office of any suspected plagiarism, data manipulation, unethical research practices, or other potential violations identified during manuscript review.
Post-Publication Research Integrity
AL-MAQASHID: Journal of Economics and Islamic Business remains committed to maintaining the integrity of its published scholarly record.
Concerns regarding published articles may be examined even after publication. When significant errors, unreliable findings, or ethical violations are identified, the journal may issue corrections, expressions of concern, or retractions in accordance with applicable publication ethics guidelines.
All decisions will prioritise transparency, fairness, accountability, and the preservation of trust in scholarly communication.
The journal encourages authors, reviewers, readers, and other stakeholders to report suspected research misconduct to the Editorial Office through the journal's official communication channels.
