Abstract

Rhetoric (Balaghah) is one of the disciplines of Arabic linguistics that plays an important role in understanding the meaning and beauty of the language of the Qur’an. Although previous studies have discussed the concepts, branches, and forms of balaghah in the Qur’an, the relationship between the essence of balaghah and its significance as a linguistic instrument in the process of Qur’anic interpretation still requires further clarification. This study aims to analyze the essence of balaghah, identify its forms in the Qur’an, and explain its significance as a linguistic instrument in tafsir (Qur’anic interpretation). This research employs a qualitative method using a library research approach through the study of classical and contemporary literature related to balaghah and Qur’anic exegesis. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method. The findings reveal that balaghah consists of three main branches, namely ‘ilm al-ma‘ani, ‘ilm al-bayan, and ‘ilm al-badi‘, which function to explain contextual appropriateness, variations in meaning expression, and the rhetorical beauty of the Qur’an. The forms of balaghah, such as ijaz (brevity), ithnab (elaboration), tashbih (simile), kinayah (allusion), majaz (metaphor), tibaq (antithesis), and saj‘ (rhymed prose), demonstrate that rhetorical elements do not merely serve to beautify language but also contribute to the clarification of the meanings contained in Qur’anic verses. The contribution of this study lies in emphasizing the relationship between the concepts and forms of balaghah and their function as linguistic instruments in Qur’anic interpretation. Therefore, balaghah holds a significant position in assisting interpreters (mufassirun) to understand Qur’anic verses more accurately and contextually.
